CHRISTIE CANCER HOSPITAL: ALEX HALL RELAXATION ROOM AND GARDEN, MANCHESTER
Client: Private fundraising initiative.
Designed and Completed with Nikki Blustin.
Brief: To provide a calming, multi-sensory and versatile space for patients, friends and relatives to relax before and after tests and treatment. The room is to function both during the day and at night for in-patients of all ages to retreat, communicate, use the internet, or watch films.
Method: Inspired by the soft forms found in nature, especially the river worn pebble, an existing waiting room within the Christie Hospital NHS Trust was redesigned to create a contemporary environment that allows patients a sense of privacy and a greater connection to nature, with views of the garden. Intimate seating areas were created, partially separated by screens, whilst maintaining an overall sense of openness and space. Lighting is key to the project, ranging from ambient calm lighting to individual locally controllable task lighting. Colour changing lighting is built into the screens as an optional ambient effect. The landscaping of the garden which forms part of the hospital entrance, will use sculptural features and planting to encourage walking and sitting in a relaxing environment. Additional funding is being raised for the garden landscaping.
Completion date: September 2006.
