WOODLAND SANCTUARY BATHROOM

Client: Kohler USA.

Designed and Completed with Nikki Blustin.

Brief: To design a bathroom for the Kohler Design Center in Wisconsin USA showcasing a newly launched Kohler product range.

Method: Using the concept of the bathroom as a personal sanctuary and retreat from the hectic pace of daily life, we created a flexible space that would allow individual users to control the intimacy and configuration of the room.

One enters a transitional ante-chamber space on the diagonal, where a ritual hand basin and jug mark the start of the cleansing process.

Each of the senses has been considered - from the tactile qualities of the surfaces, the audio soundtrack and the colour changing dimmable lighting which can be altered to adapt to different moods, ranging from morning bright light through to sensual coloured lighting to help induce a state of relaxation. The concealed lighting behind the resin screens mimics the dappled light one might experience walking through a bamboo grove, whilst the cut outs in the timber ceiling reflect the light falling through a canopy of trees.

The materials used throughout were chosen to minimise environmental impact: eco resin lines the walls, sustainable timber is used throughout, styling products include towels made from bamboo and furniture made from cork and end of line seatbelts.

Completion date: October 2006.
