UNIT-E
Client: Surrey County Council
Brief: to design an office recycling system to be installed into an eco office champion in the Surrey area, and to promote "There are 3 R's in Surrey" campaign.
Method: We were keen to make it easy for offices to be inspired by sustainability and recycling. But more than just make this a functional weekly task we felt it important to demonstrate the importance of the community, both within and outside of the office.
The base of the units contain bins for holding recycled materials such as paper, plastics, metals and glass, with a series of smaller items such as printer cartridges, old phones and plastic bags. On the side is a hook for a reusable shopping bag and to the rear is a cardboard holding unit.
Sprouting form these units are a series of boards that show how to increase the office sustainability by offering local information; a swap it board to display unwanted items, an office energy meter, and top weekly tips for cutting down the use of resources. Other sections give information on local recycling centres, charity shops, cycle schemes and lift sharing websites. An area for toxin removing plants (such as Ivy and certain ferns) has been included to bring life, greenery and improved air quality to the office space.
Completed: July 2008
