BANCROFT COMMUNITY CENTRE - PHASE 2, BETHNAL GREEN, LONDON
Clinet: Bancroft Management Tenants Council in association with a developer partner
Designed and Completed with Nikki Blustin.
Brief: We were asked to revisit the design to look at cost effective means to construct a new centre. Using shipping containers as a means of construction, we looked at ways to maximise the use of available land in order to balance the addition of key worker apartments against the cost of a new community facility.
Method: The shipping containers were used to build up a new street along Mantus Road, with work space on the ground floor and living accommodation above, including external garden / balcony space for everyone. Using two or three containers per unit, fifty five units were placed on the site unified behind a colourful screen wall that leads pedestrians into the community sports facility in the centre of the estate. The colours and designs used have been inspired by Bangladeshi fabrics in movement along the length of the street.
This project was worked on in collaboration with Architects in Residence.
Completion date: Ongoing - discussion still in progress.
