BO'NESS SUSTAINABLE HOUSING, SCOTLAND
Clinet: ING Real Estate.
Designed and Completed with Nikki Blustin.
Brief: As part of a larger regeneration scheme to breathe new life into this town, ING were given two 1920's ex-council housing blocks to convert. We were asked to provide a strong concept and image that would provide attention and excitement for the forthcoming development and new interest in this town.
Method: We proposed a sustainable scheme that is respectful of the historical style of the buildings and the delicate environment that they are set in. We worked with the Art Deco design aesthetic of the facades, proposing a striking new image for the buildings, using colour and a layer of detail that anticipates utilising local craftsmanship for new screens and balconies.
It was important to plan for these buildings to function as efficiently as possible, so we envisage community resources being pooled to reduce energy consumption, and high levels of insulation. The flats will be re-organised internally to open up the views to the sea, and to create a contemporary living arrangement. Our aim is to create spacious, tactile apartments with large bathrooms and sustainable eco finishes throughout.
We propose shared gardens, which will be terraced to provide public and private space: allotments with garden sheds, a recycling area, shared barbeques and bike sheds to encourage alternative forms of transport.
Updating the concept of these refurbished blocks will enable future residents to adopt a healthy, positive and sustainable lifestyle choice.
The Bo'ness housing project will be worked on in collaboration with architects The Morrison Partnership.
Completion date: 2005 - 2007.
